I can hardly remember life before SolidWorks……before I met David and Richard Darbyshire……and that’s not a bad thing at all!
Nearly 19 years ago, thru an amazing chain of events…..life was ‘happening’ while I was making plans. One day my brother handed me a sub sandwich wrapper with a phone number on it, and thus began a career CURRENTLY spanning 3 decades!
To me, Engineering is a ‘lifestyle’. It’s something that like so many others, I just can’t ‘turn off’! It’s who I am, not what I do.
Correction: It’s BOTH!! 🙂
What is your role at DASI?
I am on a team of the most talented SOLIDWORKS Engineers in the World! I am very much a road warrior, but out with our Customers is where I feel I can do the most good. I spend most of my time demonstrating SolidWorks products for new Prospects as well as presenting to more seasoned SolidWorks users and our many regional User Groups. I enjoy spending time with the Creators and Consumers of SOLIDWORKS data in many different design disciplines in many different industries.
How long have you been working for DASI?
I started with DASI Solutions in February of 1997. We were called Microsolid Solutions then, but in 2002 we split Microsolid into 2 of the most well respected SolidWorks Resellers in the World.
What do you enjoy most about working for DASI?
You don’t work for the same company as long as I have and not like your job, so that goes without saying. But for me…..it’s the PEOPLE!! At DASI, we are TRULY a “Family”. We know each other’s kids, we’ve participated in each other’s weddings and we’ve got each other’s backs!
Is it just a “job” or is it an “Adventure”?
Working in the world of software is ALWAYS an Adventure, but we actually GO places too. Every year, a large group of DASI Employees goes to the SolidWorks World Conference. (I have yet to miss one, EVER.)
In 2000, at SolidWorks World in New Orleans, I earned the distinction of being the first ever SolidWorks Model Mania Champion. I was able to pull it off again in 2008 in San Diego. For those who don’t know, this is actually a great honor because we are competing against other AE’s from around the world!
The best part is that winning Model Mania is NOT a distinction unique to just me at DASI! John MacArthur, Shawn Bentley, Ryan Cole (and even Jeremy Regnerus when he worked for DASI) have all placed and/or won Model Mania at SolidWorks World too! (see: What do you enjoy most about working at DASI? 🙂
Tell us a little bit about your life outside of work.
Life outside DASI centers around my wife and my 8 and 5 year old daughters. I am a very involved Dad and I spend as much time as I can at the school, helping in classrooms and participating in a program called Watch D.O.G.S., where we promote male involvement at the Elementary School level.
The 3 months a year we actually have good weather, I spend as much time as I can with my family down at the lake, at the driving range and practice green, or tending to our garden and our chickens. 🙂
Before working at DASI, what was the most unusual or interesting job you had?
Before DASI I was finishing up at Western Michigan University. I had a great job at Best Buy, some not so great jobs at Meijer and McDonalds (where I was Management within 2 weeks of starting :/)
For most of my time between High School and DASI, I was a delivery driver and shift manager at Hungry Howie’s. That could be why I enjoy my time on the road with DASI so much.
Looking at it now, it’s clear how I ended up in a career based on serving our customers.
What is the best vacation you ever went on?
Last year, my wife and I were fortunate enough to travel with some of my colleagues and their spouses to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Take it from me, I’ve been to Jamaica twice and St. Thomas beats it 10 times over!
It was so memorable that I catch my wife a few times a month looking at properties to buy on St. Thomas and St. John. SOMEDAY! 🙂
What are three things you enjoy?
My wife and I exercise at the gym 3 times a week for 6 years now. I just don’t feel right anymore without a workout.
I also enjoy learning. Not a day can go by where I haven’t learned something. I had the privilege to meet Destin Sandlin of @SmarterEveryDay on YouTube this year at SolidWorks World. I have a lot in common with him in that I find something to learn in everything I do. If you haven’t seen his works, check it out! 🙂
Share one random fact about yourself.
I may have a slight addiction to Adidas shoes! I’m on the road a lot and I pass A LOT of Adidas Outlet Stores………and I just can’t seem to drive past them without seeing what’s new in stock.
……………my ‘get out of jail free card’………my wife likes Adidas stuff too! 😉
