Business leaders and educators in Southeastern Michigan and the surrounding areas are well aware of the shortage of talent within the skilled trade’s industries. When the two come together in the interest of the future workforce, something amazing happens. There is just something special about watching a young adult have that moment; that moment where it all “clicks” and they finally get it.
There are hundreds of student competitions that take place every year that empower and encourage high school students to follow career paths into STEM fields. One of the biggest student competitions that take place every year is the SkillsUSA Competition. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. It is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students. The partnership is aimed to help students excel by preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
DASI Solutions is excited to participate in the 2016 State Leadership & Skills Conference that will be held April 8-10, 2016 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Each April, approximately 500 businesses and industry leaders will participate in a skills and leadership contest that over 1,500 students from across the state will compete in. The same industry leaders who help throughout the year to organize these contests will also help judge them. The last day of the competition consists of an awards session where students win top honors for the contests that they have participated in. Each year, industry leaders donate prizes for the students in the form of scholarships, tools, manuals and more. First place winners from each division in most contests are offered the opportunity to represent Michigan at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition.
We, at DASI Solutions, partnered up with SOLIDWORKS Corporation in an effort to sponsor lunches for the students competing in the competitions. As a collective, we are proud to be involved as part of the initiative to help fill the gap of skilled trades workers left behind from all of the baby boomers who are about to approach retirement.
Becoming involved with the future workforce can be so rewarding; I know it has been for me. Whether you are a business leader, educator, mentor, a parent or just someone looking to have some fun and excitement, I definitely suggest finding and attending a student STEM competition in your area! The energy surrounding the students is overwhelming and there is just something about watching young people so passionate about something they love.
Trust me, you won’t regret it!
