In SOLIDWORKS 2019, we have a new way to offset entities on a surface. In SOLIDWORKS 2017, we were introduced to the “Offset on Surface” feature, which allowed us to offset edges or faces along a surface.
This offset was calculated using the Euclidean method (the shortest distance in a straight line between the original edge and the offset itself). In 2019 we now have the option to choose a Geodesic Offset which will calculate the offset along the curvature of the surface.
In the image below, you can see the difference between an offset value of 1” using either the Euclidean option or the Geodesic Option.
The property manager for the “Offset on Surface” command makes it clear and even gives tooltips when hovering over the two options and the result will be a 3D sketch with the desired offset sketch entity.
